Philanthropedia names the W. Haywood Burns Institute a high-impact nonprofit in the U.S.
In October 2011, we were honored to learn that a group of 127 experts identified the W. Haywood Burns Institute as 1 of 16 high-impact nonprofits working in criminal justice in the U.S. Experts were asked to consider nonprofits from a local/state perspective and identify those whose work on criminal justice issues had the highest impact.
Some of reviews experts had about our impact were:
“Many people talk about racial disparities, but the Burns Institute has found solutions and also ways to involve systems in addressing racial disparities.”
“The Burns Institute has accomplished results in Minnesota and California and has established the Community Justice for Youth Network. They have allowed for the growth of and provision of technical assistance to Task Force on Racial Disparities in New York City.”
“The W. Haywood Burns Institute has had a significant impact on disproportionate minority contact in the juvenile justice system by developing systems for public agencies to analyze and document disparities in treatment and contact and to develop systems of engaging youth with public agency officials in developing strategies for reducing the disparities.”

Philanthropedia (at GuideStar) is a nonprofit organization working to help donors make smarter donations by connecting them with some of the highest impact nonprofits in a cause. They are different from other online rating sites or donation sites because they use experts to identify high-impact nonprofits. Experts are not allowed to vote for their own organization.
All the information collected from the research is available on Philanthropedia’s website and will shortly be available on GuideStar Take Action’s website.
